Kandy — Temple of the Sacred Tooth

Central Province, Sri Lanka

Kandy, the creation of the last king Wimaladharmasuriya I, is known for its great kings who ruled the city independently for almost 225 years until the British took over in 1815. It is also the place where the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha is enshrined in a magnificent temple. The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, established in 1816, span over 147 acres flanked by the Mahaweli River, featuring an orchid house, spice garden, and incredible colonies of flying foxes.
