Famous for its 1st century BC cave temple complex, Dambulla is an archaeological treasure. The rock temple consists of a series of 5 caves with painted areas covering more than 20,000 square feet of Buddhist murals. A magnificent 47-foot sleeping Buddha carved out of the rock dominates the main cave. This sacred pilgrimage site has been continuously used as a place of worship for over 22 centuries.
