Minneriya National Park features a vast 300-hectare reservoir built in the 4th century by King Mahasena. The region is home to wild elephants which gather in herds on the shores of the lake to drink and bathe, creating the famous 'Gathering' — the largest wild elephant congregation in Asia, with up to 300 elephants visible at a time during the dry season.
