Colombo, the executive and judicial capital of Sri Lanka, is a principal port of the Indian Ocean with one of the largest artificial harbours in the world. The earliest written mention may be from Faxian, a 5th-century Chinese traveler. From the 16th century, the Portuguese, Dutch, and British each developed the city. Notable landmarks include the Gangarama Temple, Independence Square, and the Colombo Port City development.
